WHY A 1–4 SCORING SYSTEM?

Research in survey and performance-rating design consistently shows that respondents often gravitate toward the middle option when an odd-number scale is used. This is called central tendency bias. With a 1–5 scale:
- Many people default to 3 (β€œaverage” or β€œsafe”)
- Ratings become less decisive
- Differences between players can be blurred
With a 1–4 scale:
- There is no neutral middle option
- Coaches must make a clearer judgement
- Data becomes more meaningful and actionable
PlayerLens Scale:
- Developing
- Emerging
- Strong
- Outstanding
This mirrors academy-style assessment by encouraging purposeful evaluation rather than β€œmiddle of the road” scoring.
